Felicia Mihali s'est librement inspirée de deux légendes, celle de l'enlèvement des Sabines et celle des Danaïdes. Dans son roman, les Comans enlèvent des Slavines, les filles du village voisin, lors d'un souper festif où ils les ont conviées avec leurs familles. Le lendemain, ils les épousent.
